At Chaplains on the Way we meet individuals—where they are—to listen, offer companionship, and provide opportunities for spiritual growth and connection through worship and spiritual practices. In a spirit of openness, our community welcomes people of all faiths and those who do not identify with any religion.
Spiritual Companionship and Pastoral Walks
Our street ministry takes us out into the streets and gathering places of Waltham to bring a ministry of spiritual companionship and hope to the members of our community. Our practice is to walk side-by-side with people we meet to listen and build trusting relationships. We visit with people at the following places in the community:
- Community Day Center of Waltham
- McDonald’s at the corner of Main and Bacon Streets
- Salvation Army (meal program)
- Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen at Immanuel United Methodist Church on Moody Street
- Home Suites Inn
We also visit our community members at the various places they may end up—such as prison or health care facilities.
We strive to meet the expressed needs of those we accompany by offering a variety of non-denominational worship services and spiritual practices that are grounded in the diversity of the Christian faith. We gather in various locations throughout Waltham to worship, meditate, pray, reflect, sing, lament, and celebrate together. Listed below are our regular weekly programs. To get a current update on our seasonal worship services and spiritual practices, please call us at 617-504-6877, or visit our Facebook page.
Wednesday Mornings @ 9a.m.Christ Church Episcopal – 750 Main Street
Members of the Chaplains on the Way community meet weekly for meditation at Christ’s Church in Waltham. We gather in a circle around a simple altar and offer meditation instructions, a short reading and prayer before meditating in sacred silence for 20 minutes. Whether you are an experienced meditator or trying it for the first time, we invite you to join us in this simple and life-affirming practice.
Second Wednesdays of the Month @ 2:30p.m. First Presbyterian Church – 34 Alder Street
Once a month, we spread our labyrinth in the beautiful sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church. With this ancient ritual, we offer a sacred and soothing place to spend an hour walking meditatively in spiritual community. Afterward, we offer coffee and fellowship. All are welcome.
Men’s Shelter Bible Study
Wednesday Evenings @ 7p.m.
Chaplains on the Way joins with the men at the Bristol Lodge Men’s Shelter for a time of spiritual connection, scriptural study, and prayer. We typically follow the order of service taken from the Book of Common Prayer. We offer some time for reflection and discussion on the scripture readings, poems, or prayers. Contact us for details at email@example.com.
Women’s Shelter Knitting Group
Tuesday Evenings @ 7p.m.
Chaplains on the Way gathers with the women at the Bristol Lodge Women’s Shelter to enjoy the calming practice of drinking tea and knitting together. No experience is necessary. Experienced knitters are available to help beginners get started with the basic stitches, and to assist if the yarn gets tangled! Contact us for details at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Spiritual Discussion Group
Tuesdays @ 4p.m. Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen (adjoining room to main dining area)
Once a week, Chaplains on the Way gathers with those who seek spiritual conversation and connection before dinner at the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen. We typically read and discuss a sacred text from either scripture, poetry, or writings from a spiritual teacher. We are open to suggestions for the readings, and we make space for all voices to be heard.
